When you fill out a Marketplace application, you'll find out if you qualify for a private plan with premium tax credits and lower out-of-pocket costs. This will depend on your income and household size.

You’ll also find out if you qualify for free or low-cost coverage through the Medicaid program in your state.

If you have retiree health benefits

If you have retiree coverage and want to buy a Marketplace plan instead, you can. But: Special Enrollment Period

A time outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period when you can sign up for health insurance. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you’ve had certain life events, including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or adopting a child, or if your household income is below a certain amount. What if I turn 65 in the middle of the year? Can I get Marketplace coverage to carry me over until I’m eligible for Medicare?

Yes. You can get a Marketplace plan to cover you before your Medicare begins. You can then cancel the Marketplace plan once your Medicare coverage starts.
